Has your pet just died? What to do now

Pets E. Ternal Cemetery

If your pet has just died

We're so sorry. Here is what to do next.

Whether your pet has passed away at home or at the vet, there is no rush, and nothing you need to get right straight away. Take a breath. When you are ready, call Terry and we will take it from there, gently and at your pace.

We answer the phone through the day and into the evening, seven days. Families are welcome to visit the grounds during daylight hours.

If your pet died at home

  1. Find a quiet, cool place. Lay your pet on a towel or blanket on their side, in a cool room out of direct sun. Gently close their eyes if you can.
  2. Take your time to say goodbye. Children and other pets often find it helps to see and sit with them for a little while.
  3. Keep them cool. In warm weather, a cool pack wrapped in a towel near their tummy helps. Try to make arrangements within about 24 hours.
  4. Call us. We can usually collect your pet from home the same day, or you are welcome to bring your pet to us.

If your pet died at the vet

Tell your vet you would like Pets E. Ternal to look after your pet. Your vet can hold your pet in their care while you decide. Then call us and we will collect from the clinic, usually the same day.

You don't have to decide everything today

Burial or cremation, a plaque, a keepsake: we'll talk you through it all, and explain every cost before anything is agreed. If you are unsure, our guide to choosing between burial and cremation may help.

Thinking of burying your pet at home?
