What changed
In November 2025 the Victorian Parliament passed reforms allowing pets to be buried alongside their owners in public cemeteries. Victoria became the second state to do this, after New South Wales. Before the change, pets could not be buried in Victoria's public cemeteries.
What it means for you today
- It is about being buried together, so it usually applies when the owner is buried.
- Each cemetery sets its own process and fees, and not every cemetery may offer it straight away.
- Many families keep their pet's ashes so they can be placed with them later.
If your pet dies first
Most pets go before us. If your pet has died, you can choose individual cremation and keep the ashes safe for the future, or a burial in our grounds, a place you can visit now.
